So before we open the hatch, we close off the room under it with a zippered dust barrier, which keeps the dust up there instead of drifting down your hallway. Then we run an insulation vacuum through the attic, pull the old material out a section at a time and clean up the room under the hatch before the barrier comes down.
We stop if it looks like vermiculite
Some older attics have vermiculite in them, and that's one I won't pull out. If something up there looks like it, we stop work and tell you to get it tested, because that's not ours to touch and moving it is where the risk comes from. I'd rather lose the day than sell you a removal I shouldn't be doing. With the old insulation out, we can see the gaps around can lights, pipes and the hatch, and that's when we do the air sealing, closing those gaps so new insulation isn't fighting a draft. We keep the vents at the eaves clear so the attic still breathes. If your cold floors are coming from below, crawl space insulation may matter more than the attic, and a hot room with empty walls usually needs wall insulation.
